After Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface, and Pinhead are gone (they stop making films). Who will the next generation of horror fans have. Right now, I'm not seeing any strong contenders. Does that mean that horror franchises will become extinct?

I don't think there is currently a candidate for the next horror icon. These things tend to go in cycles. Right now, the psychological horror movies are more in vogue.
The next horror "star" will be born when no one is looking for him/her. The best franchises are the ones that were not intended to be a franchise. The problem now is that the studios are so concerned about making the sequels, they forget to make a really good first film.

Camp... i don't think the horror franchises will ever die. We may have Sleepaway Camp/Silent Night's as opposed to ANOES/F13's for a bit but franchises will always be there at some level.
I agree with what Foo said.. Icon's aren't made intentionally... take for instance Shocker, which was Wes's attempt to make a franchise character but failed on that.. but Freddy Krueger who he didn't think would go anywhere (and sold the rights) went on to do 6 sequels.

Its funny you mention "Shocker", Zombie. I almost used the same reference myself. It was clearly an attempt to make a franchise. I liked that movie just enough not to bash it too hard. On a side note, has anyone else noticed how Wes Craven tends to re-use many similar themes and ideas in his movies? It borders on self plagiarism.

Ohh i like Shocker too... but it was the first that came to mind watching Hills have Eyes special features just a day ago helped with that....
Can you plagiarise yourself?? Anyways yeah he has used alot of the same themes throughout his work, for sure!

They tried to make Shocker a franchise? Wow, I never knew that. I kinda glad they didn't. That whole hopping into TV's at the end was kinda dumb, IMO.
I agree that psychological horror movies are now in the spotlight. I was kinda hoping that F vs J might turn producers back towards franchises, but the movie just wasn't that good. I'm just worried because Robert Englund is getting older, and has expressed his discomfort in getting into the makeup and everything. He might be getting ready to get out of the game and hang up the glove. That leaves Jason and Michael. How much longer are they going to be around. I don't think Jason X made any money, and I know Resurrection didn't make any money, so how many times are New Line and Akkad going to take it on the chin, financially that is, before they pull the plug? After all this comes to pass, we are going to be left with minor horror movies like the ones Zombie listed, not really having any big time horror icons. That will be a dark day. Someone needs to create a new icon, one that will be able to take over after all the legends are buried.

they are probably going to make a movie about bin laden or sadaam and make them the next classic "slasher" movies..just like they are doing right now with dahmer and gacey..they will probably make a timothy mcvey movie as well. thats shit...why dig up old memories that hurt people soo much? although tcm was based off of ed gein and his grave robbing days..NOONE really knows who he is unless they did research.
hopefully someday ill make a classis horror movie..but for now my ideas are remaining a secret..i need more heads to help me out as well. but a paranormal ghost...like the grudge and the ring is big right now.

domd the seventies really didn't have a horror icon until 75 with leatherface and then later myers(or am i mistaken?) but there were still great horror movies that came from that time last house, phantasm, dawn of the dead, hills have eyes to name a few. sooo what we need more than icons is great horror movies, and some will inevitably become iconic.
ouchy, there are still slasher-ish movies coming if thats what you want?? last horror show, high tension, seed of chucky, saw, session 9 among others.

well i hope that some day a person like fulcio and romerro, or craven or carpenter comes along and writes a classic to starts us out. all im saying is, i would hate it if it was a sadaam or bin laden movie. but saw, going to see on friday, the grudge i saw and liked it, boogyman from raimi is coming and it looks pretty good. but all im saying is i hope a differant character gets made up like michael or jason or freddy that everyone loves and has more then one film..within the next couple years..maybe not BETTER then freddy, michael jason..but someting close.

ginger and brigitte fitzgerald!! lol... i'm kidding but they were great in those movies. i don't watch the bundy, dahmer, manson movies that have been coming out. i can't watch.. i gave it a shot with son of sam and didn't enjoy it at all... it's different with movies somewhat based on serial killers like psycho or texas chainsaw massacre though but i don't know why

I think it is likely that we have seen the last of the horror icon. We'll still have great horror movies to look forward to in the future, but I don't think anyone will quite stick out like Freddy, Jason, and the like did.

i don't think so... people probably said the same thing when the universal monsters (dracula, frankenstein, creature) were the icons.. atleast i hope so

After Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman and such... their really weren't any icons until Myers, Krueger, Voorhees and Co. Like I said, there will be sooner or later just prob not for a while. These things are trends and you have to wait for horror films to go into that direction again.
