Evil Dead II for the reasons that we truely have Ash defined here. He's not too cartoonishly over the top (ala Army Of Darkness) or just another hapless teen (ala The Evil Dead). Here, he's Ash, someone who's luck has run out like a tank of gas, and fights the deadites with some great one-liners.
Plus, during the first half of Evil Dead II, it's a very brilliantly paced horror film. A witty screenplay, colorful characters, and good special FX for the price really make this a true classic.
And the ending is just the best, and it makes me laugh every time they're going over this prophet from the sky deal in the pages of the dead, and all Ash can say is "must not have done a very good job."
