In my list if a Director did say TV work before making a feature I won't count them, but short films or music vdieos don't matter.
Quentin Tarantino- Resevoir Dogs George Romero- Night of the Living Dead Tobe Hooper-TCM Sam Raimi- The Evil Dead Zack Snyder- Dawn of the Dead
And my fave debut is Robert Rodriguez with El Mariachi.
What he did on 7grand is amazing, and an inspiration on me, I myself am tryin to make a film, odds are my budget will be less then his.

I'd say commercially you can't top M. Night Shymalan for "The Sixth Sense".
Its almost a curse for him now though because odds are he'll never match that again let alone top it.

commercial success i meant. Unbreakable had mixed reviews and mediocre box office success. i don't think it cracked the $100mil mark. i'm thinking it made around the $60-80mil range.

If we're talking big debuts...then Wes Craven and Sam Raimi definatly don't apply, as both Last House and Evil Dead only gained a slow cult following afterwards. They were virtually unheard of upon release. Wes got some real attention with The Hills Have Eyes, and Sam rocketed with Evil Dead II.
Anywho...
Shamylan - Sixth Sense Romero - Night Of The Living Dead (like Halloween, started slow, but word of mouth made it a hit) Bava - Black Sunday Hitchcock - Strangers On A Train (i believe that was his first...) Spielberg - Duel (TV movie, but extremely sucessful) Hooper - Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Drive-In hit)
