Ok, I first saw this movie about 10 years ago when I was 12. I hated it. I wanted nothing more to do with it. It was crap as far as I was concerned. Flash forward to November 1st, 2004....My opinion of this movie has changed completely. Ever since the TCM remake came out my interest in the original went up steadily. Seeing it at deepdiscountdvd.com for $6.99 didn't hurt either. So, I recieved it in the mail today, and I watched it immediately. It felt like I was watching a different movie than I watched 10 years ago. The atmosphere of this movie was dark and gritty. I still find the characters to be rather weak, but they were just prey for good old leatherface....so who cares? Plus, the movie gets points just for that ending. Which is now one of my favorite endings to any movie. Overall it gets a 7 out of 10.

The characters were hardly pointless. They were just as boring as most other real people. One of my all time favorite films. And I totally agree about the ending. I love every minute of the film, even the minutes where Franklin talks accessivly. There are annoying people in real life, and Franklin represented them without being a lousy stereotype of annoying folk in most horror films (I'm looking in you're direction, Friday The 13th!)
I remember the first time I saw "The Exorcist," I hated it. It was so hyped up and I though it was the most uninteresting thing I've ever seen. I believe I was about 13. Flash forward about 5 years and I give it another shot and it was a totally different experience. It really was a great movie. No where near as scary as it's reputation lets you believe, but great.

Well, I didn't say they were pointless. Just a little weak in my opinion. Surprisingly, Franklin didn't annoy me one bit.

The most annoying person in the film was the bitch that wouldn't stop screaming near the end.

Yeah, because in reality, someone would react sane and rationally...psst...the film was being natural and real, and her relentless screaming is a perfectly natural reaction for the sh!t she was going through. And for the record, she did stop screaming, several times. The only times she was screaming was when either A) she was in pain (the Texas thornbrush sucks dude, and being sliced in the back) B) saw a house/building in which she believed there would be someone to help her or C) She's just in complete, absolute horror (the dinner table scene).
You can't expect every person to be strong, silent, level headed, and perfectly sane in that kind of situation. If you're legs are exausted, and you see a house in a distance with someone trying to kill you not far behind, I garantee you'd scream to try to get whoever's in that house's attention. I know I would. It's a human reaction.

I've known people who've screamed harder than that and they've never complained about their throats. Plus, she didn't scream all night, as I had mentioned, you hear more of the chainsaw than her screams during those scenes. Keep in mind she was also knocked out for some amount of time. Plus, if you're life was on the line, you wouldn't worry about hurting your throat to scream.
And zombie, was that in reference to the original or remake? Original he was pretty real, and in the Remake...other than his arm being chopped off so easily, he was pretty real too.

Yeah, how he survived that chainsaw through the stomach in pt. 2, I'll never know. Cool effect though, kudos to Savini!
