All of the classics have one(most of them). This is definitely something that horror movies nowadays are lacking. The score always added a whole lot to horror movies in the past. I feel it is an element that is mandatory if you want to have a movie that is...............scary. Phantasm, The Exorcist, Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Witchboard, Creepshow, Children Of The Corn, Friday The 13th, (sure I'm missing some)Am I alone in thinking that a great score really helps a horror movie???#nosmileys

not alone! ginger snaps had a great score.. i'd have to give some thought to other recent movies with a great score!
as for older movies, sleepaway camp, anoes, child's play, psycho, suspiria, texas chainsaw massacre, halloween, hellraiser... i could go on and on.

I'm sure there are alot of recent movies with a great score, no doubt. I just don't think it's "creepy" as where in the past, they were always creepy. I really feel that deducts from horror movies of today.

One that instantly comes to mind for me is John Carpenter's The Thing. I just watched it for the first time tonight and that score was creepy as hell.

I still haven't seen it, but would very much love to. And, it was made into a movie, but it one of the most famous television shows of all time:"The Twilight Zone". That score was among the creepiest.

Sitting here contemplating, it may just be a matter of opinion. Me, I just always believed a movie was more frightening if it had a creepy score. As a little kid, you could hide your eyes, but with your hands over your eyes, it was a bit complicated to cover your ears at the same time.

JAWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh, and....other great horror scores
Wolfen The Thing (carpenter/morricone) Halloween The Fly (shore) Phantasm The Fog The Omen Susperia Black Sunday Poltergiest Alien Warlock The Shining (kubric version) Children Of The Corn Psycho The Tenant The Exorcist The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) Hellraiser II: Hellbound (totally wipes the first film's a$$) Demons Return Of The Living Dead Evil Dead II An American Werewolf In London 28 Days Later The Wickerman The horror Of Dracula The Bride Of Frankenstien Witchboard (sh!tty movie, but wonderful score) Bram Stoker's Dracula Tenebre Zombie The Dead Zone Christine Dawn Of The Dead (2004) - okay, the score is almost unnoticable, but it's there...it's just so ambient and sets a creepy atmosphere. Masque Of The Red Death (Corman) Signs
There are few recent ones with good scores, XJ is right on this. Nowadays they're more relying on soundtracks and hit songs to drive'em. Of the recent decade (as in beginning about the mid-90's) I can only really name 3: Signs, Dawn Of The Dead, and 28 Days Later.

I know it's not really a score, but when they started playing a lounge version of Down with the Sickness I couldn't stop laughing. I'm talking about DotD, btw.

"Down With The sickness" was one of my favorite parts in DotD, the lounge version that is. I've always hated the song, but that version made me like it.

Ironically, Day Of The Dead is the only one I have seen. I rented Dawn over a year ago, but Day was in the case, instead. I forgot about seeing it after that.
